Identifying authentic Colt M4 detachable carry handle.
Would like to replace Magpul rear sight that came on my m4 Carbine with Colt detachable carry handle. What markings do I look for to avoid a generic, airsoft etc? Thank you, Don
There are no external makers markings on Colt handles, or on most any other either.
To identify airsoft or Chinese, look for non-anodized finishes, often a "paint" type coating, and signs of it being a casting.
Look at the general quality including for paint runs or defects in the finish, or cheesy materials.
A forged part will usually have a forge brand on the right rear side just in front of the windage knob. There are a number of these brand marks used. The most common Colt mark in the last couple of years is a Keyhole but there are others Colt has used.
You should not see any signs of casting or forging lines, everything should be smooth.
The only way I know that "may" positively ID a genuine Colt carry handle requires that the sight assembly be removed from the handle.
On my Colt handle, under the sight there's a "C4" stamped on the handle itself.
Best advice on getting a genuine handle is be careful where and who you buy it from.
If you want to be 100% absolutely dead certain, bite the bullet and buy a new Colt from Brownell's. This will be EXPENSIVE.
Another good source is right here on the Equipment Exchange. Buy from an established member and look for one advertised as a "take off".
Since Colt no longer ships their carbines with the handle, these will be getting harder to find.
You might see a 'bird head' forging mark for Cardinal Forge too. That's what came on my 2007 Colt 6721.
If you need a carrying handle to go with your Colt, send me a PM. I have a Cardinal Forge handle w/ trijicon flip sight if interested.
Thanks all for good information, Don
